Introduction to Coherent 2D Spectroscopy

Coherent 2D spectroscopy is the most comprehensive third order optical spectroscopy technique. It enables direct measurement of electronic coupling and energy transfer pathways, and also allows observation of coherence dynamics of excited molecules. Its spectral and temporal resolution is not limited by the uncertainty principal, leading to unprecedented richness of detail in experimental data. These properties make coherent 2D spectroscopy the experimental method of choice when exploring the functions of complex molecular systems, such as natural chromophore-protein photosynthetic complexes or their artificial equivalents.
